The brain is most able to relearn movement in the weeks right after a stroke. That makes early, regular physiotherapy one of the best investments in recovery.
Weeks 1–4: safety and small movements
The focus is on preventing stiffness and falls: positioning in bed, gentle stretches, sitting up safely and moving from bed to chair. A wheelchair keeps the patient mobile while walking is still unsafe.
Weeks 4–8: building strength
Exercises target the weaker side — standing with support, balance practice and simple hand tasks like picking up a spoon or buttoning a shirt.
Weeks 8–12: independence
Many patients begin walking with an aid, climbing a few steps and managing daily activities with less help.
How families can help
- Encourage the patient to use the weaker side for everyday tasks.
- Keep the floor clear and add night lights to prevent falls.
- Practise the exercises between sessions — little and often works best.
- Celebrate small wins; motivation matters as much as muscle.
Home physiotherapy saves tiring trips through traffic and lets the therapist train the patient in their real environment.
